There is also a choice of other fascinating islands and islets close to Nouméa.

The closest is Duck Island (L’ile aux Canards)which is just a few minutes by water taxi from Anse Vata Beach. This small island playground is a popular base for beach and water activities and an excellent site for snorkeling and the popular 'underwater walkway'. The free 30 minute tour on the underwater path can be explored independently with flippers, mask and snorkel or as part of a guided tour. You can have lunch on the island which has a faré restaurant and also hire a deck chair to relax on the beach. 

A little further on is the picturesque Maître Island (Ilot Maitre). This is an enchanting islet at the heart of a magnificent 200 acres marine reserve, only 15 minutes from the heart of Nouméa.  The luxurious and exclusive new L’Escapade Island Resort harmoniously blends into the natural curve of the white sandy beach, reflecting itself in the lagoon’s pristine waters. The facilities are superb with accommodation in spectacular overwater bungalows or beautiful garden bungalows.

Amédée Island is one of New Caledonia's 'must do' day trips, about 45 minutes from Nouméa on the high speed ‘Mary D’. This tiny islet is dominated by its 56 metre lighthouse which was constructed in Paris in 1865 and sent to New Caledonia by Napoleon III. It is worth a climb to  the top to enjoy the magnificent views. Relax on the white sandy beach or stroll around the island. Ride in the glass-bottom boat, or swim, snorkel or scuba dive. A delicious tropical style buffet lunch is served with entertainment by a traditional orchestra and dancers. Plus there is an expedition to the reef for shark and turtle spotting.

Robinson Crusoes and those people who love exotic solitude will easily find ‘their perfect island, as there are so many others to choose from – many only a few minutes from Nouméa. These include Signal Island, Goelands Island, Laregnere Island, Casy Island, Tenia Island and Ile Ouen, each surrounded by white sand beaches, with crystal clear waters perfect for snorkeling and abundant wildlife
