Isle of Pines - Discover a NEW Paradise
White-sand beaches, turquoise sheltered lagoon, clear warm water - the Isle of Pines is a true paradise.
The Isle of Pines (Ile des Pins) is located 80km south-east of Nouméa, a short 20 minute daily flight away.
It was discovered and named by Captain Cook after he saw the truly distinctive and majestic columnar pine trees, and is called 'Kunie' by the local Melanesians. The island is around 18km long and 14km wide and is world-renowned for its unspoilt beauty and truly carefree lifestyle.
Yet while relatively small in size it is big on what it has to offer the visitor. A beautiful island where time seems to stand still in an idyllic setting of white beaches under swaying palms and the soaring columnar pines from which it takes its name.
Clear turquoise water and fine white sandy beaches can be found all over the island, including Kanumera and Kuto bays, as well as the spectacular Oro natural pool (named as one of the best ‘undiscovered beaches’ in the world). While Ouameo beach is the departure point for excellent scuba diving sites. There are also several small islets within the island’s protective reef. Experience a delightful sail on Upi Bay on board a 'Pirogue' – a traditional Melanesian outrigger.
Apart from the obvious selection of water-based activities that the magnificent lagoons of Isle of Pines offer, the island has some hidden treasures that should not be missed. Not only is the landscape enchanting, the island’s locals, the Kuniés, are very kind and welcoming with their beautiful smiles.
Life today is typified by the main village of Vao, with its Melanesian architecture and layout, as well as its beautiful church that dates back to 1860 with wood carvings made by convicts. Visitors to the island will come away with special memories of traditional canoe trips and bougnas cooked on hot stones. Being here is like taking a step back in time.
Visit the Reine Hortense Caves, which legend says, were the retreat of Queen Hortense during tribal wars which took place at the beginning of the century. Or the spectacular N'ga peak.
The Isle of Pines is the ideal retreat for a day or even longer, with accommodation including the 5 Sar to 3 Star deluxe hotels and rural Melanesian lodgings.
A few days here is something you will never forget.
