Recreational fishing, in all of its forms, is one of New Caledonia’s very special leisure activities.
For many years, New Caledonia has been seen as a destination for record-breaking catches, attracting keen fishers from the four corners of the globe. The fishing is excellent, varied and basically untouched.
New Caledonia waters are home to a numerous variety of fish, most of which are edible. Fishing excursions offer the angler a chance to catch deep sea fish including tuna, trevally, marlin and deep snapper. The prize catch in New Caledonia is the large and elusive bone fish, a species found in only a handful of locations worldwide and probably nowhere else in Australia and the South Pacific.
There is something for all tastes… from deep sea fishing off a boat, to fishing off one of the gigantic sand banks or in the lagoon aboard a small craft. Deep sea and big game fishing charters operate from Nouméa and costs include hire of equipment, lunch and boat transfer. Several operators offer cruiser and catamaran expeditions, including rod fishing, spear fishing and fly fishing. Anglers can also hire their own boats for self-navigated expeditions.
You can also fish in freshwater with one of the specialised organisations - go on a package fishing camp trip, or go independently, for day or weeklong trips.
